Kampala - THE Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust has appealed to the Government for funds to enable them care for the rescued animals on Ngamba Islands. Ngamba is one the leading tourist attractions in the country. The trust also needs the money to resettle the chimps into their natural habitants in protected forests. The executive director, Lilly Ajarova, said they spend at least $120,000 (sh192m) annually to feed and care for 42 animals at the 100-acre forest on the island on Lake Victoria in Mukono district. The island has a capacity of 30 animals. "Chimpanzees are making a big contribution to tourism in the country and this spot is a major attraction that hosts over 5,000 international visitors every year," she explained. "The spot brings money into the country but we depend on donations from friends who come here, to sustain it." Ajarova was on Friday speaking at celebrations to mark 10 years of the sanctuary, which coincided with the National Environment Day. "We fear we may run out of funds to feed and provide medical care for the chimps yet they need to be protected from extinction." Ajarova said there were about 4,900 chimps in Uganda, living in different forests but they were threatened by poachers and human activity. "We work with the Police, and informers to rescue the animals and keep them on quarantine at the wildlife education centre (Entebbe) for treatment before they are brought here. "But we shall re-introduce them where they belong, where they can have enough food." http://allafrica.com/stories/200806180044.html |
