Many tourists visiting South Africa are Germans. Therefore it might be of a special interest for the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism that more than 1.000 Germans now have sent a protest letter to the Department which criticises Minister van Schalkwyk’s plan that allows the culling of elephants. The German protesters say that they do not want to visit South African Parks and Reserves to watch animals that may be slaughtered. They have urged the Minister to introduce scientifically approved, reasonable and humane strategies to address possible problems in the few areas where elephants are impacting negatively on localised habitats, such as the reduction of artificially created waterholes, the opening migration corridors, immunocontraception, non lethal deterrents to exclude elephants from vulnerable areas and the development of regional wildlife conservation programs. They are concerned that the real motivation for the South African culling-plan is driven by commercial incentives such as the desire for ivory by countries such as China and Japan; the sale of hides and the conversion of elephant in the Kruger Park slaughterhouse into “bush meat “. The Germans urge the Minister to rather back the majority of other African countries and work at ways to save the South-African elephants from extinction rather than to slaughter the remaining ones and to fuel their illegal trade and poaching by supporting the cruel ivory trade.
