MWC: Project Water Hyacinth
|
|
In June 2008 a Swiss student in sustainable
development at the University of Basel,
Lea Meier, started as the first intern for
Madagascar Wildlife Conservation. During
her three-months internship she will
conduct a feasibility study on alternative
uses of the water hyacinth (Eichhornia
crassipes) at Lac Alaotra.
Originally from South America, the
invasive water hyacinth has now spread
around the globe and has become one
of the worlds worst pest plants. It is a
free-floating, extremly fast growing and
resistent aquatic plant which quickly
covers any water surfaces with an almost
impenetrable mat.
Like in many other regions Eichhornia
crassipes also causes serious problems
on Lac Alaotra. The dense layer of plants
makes it very difficult for fishermen
to pass with their wooden pirogues.
Furthermore, it also has an impact on
the aquatic ecosystem by competing with
other native plant species and by reducing
the oxygen level of the water and thus
harming the local fish population.
The goal of this feasibility study is to
evaluate possible uses for the water
hyacinth; such as for the manufacturing
of weaving products or as an alternative to
charcoal. The results of Lea Meier’s study
will be implemented in the planning of
MWC’s project on Eichhornia crassipes.
