AFRICA

  • Africa Data Dissemination Service (ADDS)
The African Data Dissemination Service provides internet access to satellite imagery, tabular data, base map and thematic data collected for the FEWS NET (Famine Early Warning System Network) project.

  • AFRICOVER
Land Cover assessment based on Remote Sensing for the whole African continent. The objectives of the FAO-AFRICOVER project are to establish a digital georeferenced database on land-cover, and a geographic referential (geodesy, toponomy, roads, hydrography) at a 1:250,000/1:200,000 scale.

  • CARPE - Central Africa Regional Program for the Environment
A long-term initiative by USAID to address the issues of deforestation and biodiversity loss in the Congo Basin forest zone. One of their products is the Central African GIS datasets.

  • EIS-AFRICA
EIS-AFRICA is dedicated to the improvement in the management, analysis and application of information relevant to the environment to enrich policy debate and decision-making relating to the process of sustainable development and increasing the well being of African people.

  • HYDRO 1K Africa
Derived from the USGS' DEM of the world (GTOPO30), HYDRO1k provides a standard suite of geo-referenced data sets (at a resolution of 1 km) that will be of value for all users who need to organize, evaluate, or process hydrologic information on a continental scale.
  • INFORMS - An Integrated Forest Monitoring System for Central Africa.
This project is focused on mapping forest types, extent, spatial distribution, and biomass of central Africa. It uses a network of contacts and collaborators in the region to develop a forest monitoring system.

GLOBAL

  • Deforestation Mapping Group (DMG)
The Deforestation Mapping Group (DMG) is creating baseline forest cover products and providing them at the cost of reproduction to the various user groups interested in forest cover extent throughout the world.

  • Digital Chart of the World (DCW)
ESRI's Digital Chart of the World data set, originally developed for the US Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) using DMA data (scale 1:1,000,000).

  • Global Land 1-KM AVHRR Project
This global land 1-km data set project represents an international effort to acquire, archive, process, and distribute 1-km AVHRR data of the entire global land surface in order to meet the needs of the international science community (USGS EROS Data Centre/ESA).

  • Global Land Cover Characterization
A 1-km resolution global land cover characteristics data base for use in a wide range of environmental research and modeling applications (USGS EROS Data Centre/UNL/JRC).

  • GLCF Global Land Cover Facility
The Global Land Cover Facility is responsible for the development, distribution, and archiving of novel Earth Science products and satellite imagery, including classified images of the Earth's land cover, in a variety of custom formats.

  • Global Rain Forest Mapping (GRFM) Project
The objective of GFRM is the acquisition of a spatially and temporally contiguous coverage of JERS 1 SAR data for every remaining forested area on Earth, to be provided for research and educational purposes world wide.

  • GTOPO30
A global digital elevation model (DEM) with a horizontal grid spacing of 30 arc seconds (approximately 1 kilometer), developed to meet the needs of the geospatial data user community for regional and continental scale topographic data (USGS EROS Data Center).

  • TREES
Set up by the European Commission, JRC and ESA, the objective of the TREES (Tropical Ecosystem Environment Observation by Satellite) project is the production of a global “reference map” of the world’s tropical forests from satellite images, to develop a reliable method for forest change assessment in the humid tropics and to make this information available in a Tropical Forest Information System (TFIS).

  • Tropical Forest Mapping Project
In this study, high resolution satellite imagery is used to map areas of forest clearing and general land cover types for the entire Central African tropical region

  • UNEP/GRID-Arendal Datasets
UNEP/GRID-Arendal's Online GIS and Map and Graphics Database for the distribution of global spatial datasets, including some population and environmental data sets for Africa.

  • United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) Data Portal
"UNEP.Net delivers authoritative environmental information from a broad range of information and data providers committed to making their information freely available to the whole spectrum of users of environmental information."
