Afri Leo Foundation

The Afri-Leo Foundation (established 1977) is a registered, Namibian based, non-profit organization, dedicated to the protection and conservation of the lion in Namibia.

We are based on a private game reserve, bordering the Etosha National Park.

Why protect the Namibian Lion?

  • The Namibian lions are protected species.
  • They are fast losing ideal habitat.
  • Lion populations of Etosha National Park and Kunene Region are FIV-free (Feline Immuno-deficiency Virus / Feline Aids).
  • They are a major tourist attraction and of great economic importance.

Afri-Leo contributes to conservation and sustainable management of Namibia's valuable lion population by supporting:

Environmental Education and Awareness Programmes - Youth learn about lions, their role within the ecosystem, problems facing lions due to loss of ideal habitat, disease, drought.

We also support:

Research and monitoring projects - Etosha Boundary Lion Project commenced September 2001, monitoring cross border lion movement, lion mortalities.

Human Predator Conflict Resolution - Conflict situations arise when lions kill livestock.

Etosha Boundary Fence Project - Repairs porous sections of Etosha boundary fence, encourages positive co-operation between farmers, ministries and Afri-Leo Foundation, contributing to effective protection of livestock / game and ultimately, the lion in Namibia.
