The African Wild Dog Foundation sees it as her mission to save the African wild dog from extinction in his natural habitat. Our goal is to re-introduce the African wild dog to its former habitat, where the wild dogs have or have seemingly disappeared. In 1995, a number of pups were caught at the Maasai Steppe, a non-protected area, where they were destined to die. These pups were brought to the Mkomazi Game Reserve, in Tanzania, where they formed the basis of an initial, successful breeding group. In close cooperation with the Erasmus-University, Rotterdam (Neth.), Department of Virology, research is being done as to why the distemper vaccinations insufficiently protected our wild dogs. At the same time, research is being done regarding the effect that the vaccinations against rabies and parvovirus infection are having.
