Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Remote Sensing are geospatial technologies with important applications in many areas including natural resources, wildlife management and conservation. In Africa, many conservation organisations have started to develop digital maps and spatial databases.

ACF wants to provide expert advice and help in these areas - and we are looking to make the web portal a co-ordinating centre for all such material, either providing facilities for their use on the web or links through to organisations' own websites.

What can you do with GIS and remote sensing?

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) can be used as a research tool and spatial data management system, as well as a means for communicating information to a target audience. With Remote Sensing it is possible to conduct medium and large scale inventories and monitoring of natural resources.

GIS and remote sensing are, often in combination, used in vegetation or habitat mapping, gap analysis, monitoring the progress of conservation activities, quantifying ecological (spatial) patterns, connectivity and network analysis, monitoring of wildlife populations, etc., etc. And ultimately, to build so-called spatial decision (or management) support systems.

Current applications include a wide range of topics in conservation and wildlife management, such as:

  • Vegetation mapping
  • Land cover mapping
  • Land use mapping
  • Animal tracking
  • Use of Global Positioning System (GPS)
  • Tropical forest cover monitoring
  • Drainage and precipitation mapping
  • Infrastructure mapping
  • Ecosystem analysis
  • Environmental risk assesment
  • Desertification monitoring
  • Design and management of protected areas
  • Habitat description and deliniation
  • Habitat suitability analysis
  • Natural resource surveys/management
  • Coastal zone management
  • Reintroduction programs
  • Modelling wildlife abundance and distribution
  • Biodiversity assesment and mapping
  • Geostatistical applications
  • Biogeography
  • Conservation planning
  • Sustainable land use programs

In the Science & Technical Corner Conferences section of our online forums, you will find the GIS and Remote Sensing for Conservation forum. Please feel free to share your research findings and experience, or to ask questions about geospatial tools and their application.

For those of us who are not familiar yet with GIS and remote sensing, please use the index on this page to get more information. Click the hyperlinks to get an introduction into the general concepts, principles and components of GIS and Remote Sensing. The GIS & Remote Sensing Resources section will guide you to extensive information on the internet, including online tutorials, directories, software and spatial data resources.
