WHAT IS JEMA
JEMA stands for Joint Environment and Development Management Action. It is
a voluntary based, non-profit making, ACTION oriented education programme
founded in October, 1996, at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. It
comprises a multi-disciplinary team of students, academic staff, and graduates
who voluntarily contribute and share their knowledge, expertise and time
in addressing environment issue and through collaborative actions.

The organisation has full
time working secretariat guided by an Advisory Board and liaison centre at
sister colleges of University of Dar es Salaam - UCLAS and MUCHS. The
organisation has great networking with local communities in promoting
participatory approaches in environment management and sustainable
development.
The organisation works under the University of Dar es Salaam. However it
retains autonomous decision on daily activities. Therefore JEMA, despite
working with University administration on various programmes pertaining to
environmental rehabilitation at the campus and narrowing the knowledge gap
between University and local communities, has effective networking with National
Environmental Council (NEMC; Vice President Office - Division of Environment;
Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism; Rombo District Council - Kilimanjaro
Region; Kinondoni District Council; Bagamoyo District Council - Coast Region.
On other hand, the organisation works with various national and international
organisations such as FAO, WFP, CEEST, ENVIROCARE; UVIKIUTA; WWF - TANZANIA
OFFICE; Green COM (TZ); ECONEWS AFRICA - KENYA; University of Harare - Zimbabwe
and GOSEA - Netherlands.

Jema Nursery - a source of tree seedlings for campus
'greening' - supplying about 4000 seedlings
annually.
The organisation operates
five programmes simultaneously as follows: environmental rehabilitation at
University campus; biodiversity conservation; outreach services on environmental
management, poverty alleviation and HIV/AIDS awareness creation; research
work for promoting participating approaches in environment management and
sustainable development; networking and capacity building.
