SOUTH AFRICAN CANDIDATES

Somkhanda Game Reserve has a very limited number of opportunities for interns just outside of Pongola. We are looking for people who need further experience in the bush, and are looking to increase their practical knowledge of the bush and conservation.

Applicants need to have completed a qualification in conservation, ecology, or similar, and we will require a copy of any certificates, and a Skype interview before we can complete the application process.

This is an opportunity to volunteer without the high costs normally associated with volunteering. You have to get yourself to Pongola, or nearby, if you do not have your own transport, and you must be able to cover your own food costs.

There is no charge for this 1 month internship and the possibility of extending for 3 additional months.  The first month is to familiarize yourself with the day-to-day activities on the reserve.  You will likely assist other interns with their projects, learn technical skills typically used in the bush, and will be expected to write a proposal for a practical project (this is open to anything dealing with conservation of your interest) within this month.  The proposal will be reviewed and feedback provided.  Should the proposal be accepted as contributing to the management plan, you will be able to stay on for an additional 3 months to carry out your project.

Please send all applications to info@africanconservation.org

Applications will be forwarded to the organization and the Intern Program Manager will be happy to answer your questions, provide more information, and provide you with an official application.

INTERNATIONAL CANDIDATES

Have you ever wanted to work or conduct research on a game reserve?  Somkhanda Game Reserve, in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, is looking for international candidates interested in conservation management, ecological research, and/or ecotourism/hospitality.

African Insight offers internships in these areas to students, recent graduates, and citizen scientists who are interested in understanding the complexities of reserve management and contributing to the overall management of a community-owned reserve through practical and/or scientific research projects.  Internships are typically 3 months, though some interns may choose to stay longer (per visa requirements).  Conservation management and ecotourism/hospitality interns create or take lead on current practical projects that provide vital data to inform the management plan.  Ecological research internships are meant for those doing research for a senior thesis, grad program, etc and are under the supervision of an academic advisor and the project approved by AI management prior to arrival.

International candidates are charged a program fee for this program – includes pickup from Durban, bush camp accommodation, professional rangers for supervision, laundry facilities.  Does not include flights, insurance, food, incidentals.
