Wildlife Reserve and Community Experience

Volunteer Projects Volunteers Malawi

If you're looking to volunteer with both people and wildlife then we have just the placement for you. We're looking for enthusiastic individuals with a great work ethic and can-do attitude to join the team for a minimum of two weeks.

Whether you have a passion for wildlife and have always wanted to work with animals, need a break and want to get back to nature or you are looking for that perfect family holiday with a difference.

Look no further!

We can offer you the chance to live and work in a wildlife reserve; imagine eating your breakfast with the giraffe, zebras in your garden, or an ostrich pinching your laundry. As we have no large carnivores you are free to wander the bush or cycle without the need to be stuck in a hot vehicle or accompanied by an armed scout.

Do you want to be part of this?

Propel your life experience into the next stratosphere!!! Learn loads of new skills and gain first-hand research experience in the field: identifying animals, collecting data and wildlife tracking on your own. There is also sometimes the chance to take part in wildlife release programs, join master’s students with professional research or if you want to stay for a longer period you can carry out your own research in a field that you are passionate about. If you are interested in interacting with the local communities then we can offer you a chance to help with our education programs in local schools or with several sustainable livelihood programs. We can also offer you the chance to spend some of your time at Malawi’s leading animal rescue center, where you are able to care for abandoned and orphaned animals and help towards their rehabilitation.

We have a vast range of activities and projects that you will be part of including ongoing wildlife research projects and community outreach missions, so depending on your interests we can tailor working schedules to suit you. Or if you are after an activity assortment we can mix it up, as they say variety is the spice of life!!!

This unique wildlife reserve is a magical place. Waking up in the morning to the sounds of the bush and drinking your morning coffee in the garden surrounded by zebras is an unforgettable experience, as is the last drink of the day on Sunset Deck! The work will be demanding but very rewarding and you will be sincerely welcomed into the team by the staff who are super friendly - a reflection of why Malawi is known as the 'Warm Heart of Africa'.

We work 6 day working weeks with one long weekend off per month. The famous 'Lake of Stars' is only 30 minutes away and volunteers often get together to organise a well deserved break of snorkelling and sunbathing.

This beautiful reserve is as important for the local communities as it is for the wildlife that lives here and by working together we can conserve Kuti for this and future generations to enjoy. We aim to inspire people to live in harmony with nature through our education and outreach programmes and we're implementing sustainable livelihood programmes out in the surrounding villages.

Key Info

You will be living in the middle of a wildlife reserve. We have dorm-style accommodation with solar power, hot water, freshly prepared meals from our chef and Wi-Fi. We offer clear skies of a thousand twinkling stars, the milky way and a resident choir of crickets, frogs, owls and monkeys ready to sing you to sleep!

We are just outside of Salima, 1 ½ hours from Lilongwe. The reserve is a haven for wildlife, from big mammals like giraffe, zebra, sable and impala through to the hundreds of species of birds and the habitats are quite spectacular, including the best spot for sunsets in Malawi! There's no better way to explore the park than by bike - since there's a lack of predators or dangerous animals like elephants you don't need to rely on a vehicle or armed scout to do your work.

On your days off there are plenty of opportunities to visit the lake, which is only 30 minutes away. Also for long weekends, destinations such as Cape Mclear for scuba diving and windsurfing, or Liwonde National Park, where you can take a boat safari to see their fabulous population of elephants – are both very accessible. For further afield destinations like Zomba, Nyika plateau or a safari in Zambia you future co-workers have lots of knowledge and experience to advise.
